On September 21, 2010, Swedish Administrative Court Chief Judge Peter Freudenthal handed down his decision in the case of Domenic Johansson of Gotland, Sweden, dashing the hopes of his parents for reunification with their son, who has been kept in foster care for over one year. Dominic was seized by Swedish authorities from the plane he and his parents had boarded as they were moving to India, his mother’s home country. Authorities cited untreated cavities in the boy’s teeth, failure to vaccinate, and homeschooling as reasons for taking him into custody.

After multiple appeals, Judge Freudenthal has upheld the decision of Swedish social services officials, who are the engineers behind the case. Domenic has been kept from his parents since June 25, 2009, and has only been allowed to visit with them once every five weeks with a supervised 15-minute telephone call once every two weeks. It has become increasingly apparent that the social workers have no real intention of reuniting this family, and that they have simply transferred Domenic from the Johanssons to the foster family. Domenic is now in the public school system.

Friends, family, and a university professor of psychology testified that the Johanssons are more than capable of parenting Domenic and caring for him. Despite this testimony, and the willingness of the family to do whatever the state wants them to do, Judge Freudenthal decided to go along with the assertions of the social workers that Domenic was better off in the care of the state. Meanwhile, Freudenthal spent almost as much time discussing the fees the appointed lawyers would collect as he did explaining the rationale for the state’s continued custody of Domenic.

Ruby Harrold-Claesson, a noted international human rights lawyer and president of the Nordic Committee for Human Rights (nkmr.org), represented Christer Johansson before being removed from the case on the motion of Eva Ernston, Domenic’s appointed attorney. Harrold-Claesson has developed a practice of fighting Swedish social services, a system she calls increasingly “evil.”

“Held Hostage”

I have never in 20 years of practice seen a case more badly handled,” says Harrold-Claaesson. “This family has been so traumatized that they may never recover. The Swedish government has grossly violated this family’s human rights, both under Swedish law and under the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR). Under the ECHR people have the right to leave their country. But in this case the social services took this poor little boy and…

Social Media

There are many who doubt or downplay the relevance of the Old Testament to our times. Those people have probably never taken the time to read the book of Proverbs. I read from Proverbs almost every day and I am continually amazed at just how relevant this book is. It seems that wisdom is timeless. The lessons David taught Solomon speak to myself and my children as much as they did to the men and women of ancient Israel. The wisdom of God given to Solomon continues to ring loud and clear in my heart.

If Solomon were alive today and we were to ask him how we are to relate to one another in this digital world, if we were to ask him how we can honor God in our use of all these social media available to us today, here is how he might respond:

Faith & Family Seminar: 16 October 2010 Auckland

Faith & Family Seminar

Date: 16th October 2010

Venue: Covenant Presbyterian Churc, Rogers Road, Manurewa

Those from among you shall build the old waste places; You shall raise up the foundations of many generations; And you shall be called the Repairer of the Breach, The Restorer of Streets to Dwell In. ~ Isaiah 58:12

‘Faith & Family’ is about encouraging a godly heritage for the Lord. We want to inspire parents with the marvellous plan and purpose that God has for the family.

The family is far more than just a place to live, eat, and sleep. It’s a place of Christian discipleship, hospitality, evangelism, education, and national influence. The battle isn’t outside our homes, it’s taking place inside. Fathers abdicating, mothers usurping, children idle and rebellious … this is where a fresh vision is needed. This is where fathers and mothers must dare to stand against the cultural attacks on the family. We live in times when the family is degraded, devalued, and often defeated. Let’s dare to believe God’s Word and be families that will influence and challenge the social and cultural norms that surround us.

Our family wants to encourage you to continue in all that you are doing with your family and inspire you with an even broader vision and give you practical ideas that can impact your family for generations to come.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Murray & Sharon Drinnan

About us

Murray has been married to Sharon for 26 years and they have eight children, one married and seven at home . Both come from non-Christian backgrounds and were saved in 1983 whilst living together unmarried. The Lord saved a work mate and one of Murray’s brothers, and brought them to speak into our lives, along with Murray’s praying mother (who had been saved 5 years earlier).

They have 17 years of homeschooling experience under their belt. Murray has a desire to encourage parents, particularly fathers, to get passionate about their families and to invest their energies into them.

They are ordinary parents just like you who want to encourage others in the raising of their families and in establishing a Godly heritage.

Faith & Family’s logo is a pomegranate tree. The pomegranate is a symbol of righteousness and fruitfulness.

This index page provides links to data on homeschooling.

Homeschooling is available for parents who want to educate their children at home, provided they maintain a standard of education equivalent to that of a registered school. Parents need to obtain approval from the Ministry of Education to homeschool their children during the years of compulsory schooling (between 6-16 years). They are given an annual grant to help with the cost of learning materials.

ERO: Homeschooling

ERO: Homeschooling

Every child in New Zealand has a right to education.

While most New Zealand children are educated in schools, the Government also allows parents to make other choices. Some parents choose to take on the responsibility of educating their children. In order to do this, they will have sought and been granted an exemption from enrolling their children at registered schools. This is commonly referred to as homeschooling or home educating.

In granting this exemption, the Secretary for Education accepts that each child will be taught at least as regularly and well at home as in a registered school. If a child is not being taught as regularly and well as in a registered school the Secretary for Education can revoke the Certificate of Exemption.

ERO carries out reviews when requested by the Secretary for Education, or in other particular circumstances.
