Divided we fall – united we’re tall!

We make so much more of an impact, within and outside our community, when we unite.

Divided we fall – united we’re tall!

This is the one event on the calendar where the whole region comes together
for family fun, frolics and friendship so … we’ll see you there!
Think about what to pack in that yummy picnic.
Check you’ve invited the grandparents, the partner, the curious.
Dust off the rug/chairs. Hunt down that sunscreen for Thursday’s awesome weather!

Here’s the lo-down and programme for the …

VOLUNTEERS: We need people to contact the organiser (below) now to help out for a short time on the day. Great experience for a teen; spreads the load on the organising team.
INFO TENT: Orange gazebo where AHE volunteers can help you find your feet. Collect info about upcoming events, membership, linking into your local group, etc. It’s also the registration area and meeting place for the day’s on-site activities.
LOCAL GROUPS: If you have a sign or flag with your name (eg, East Auckland) to place near you and are happy to say Hi to a newbie, that would be great.
RAIN DATE: There isn’t one – only actual heavy & wild weather will put us off. That hasn’t happened in 11 years!  You could check Metservice but it’s not particularly reliable. One year, the forecast was “cloudy, rain at times” but was actually perfect weather!
BEHAVIOUR: Kindness & respect is the order of the day so ensure your family is supervised & knows the rules. Any issues should be notified to an AHE volunteer at the Info Tent – we need to know!
SITE: We have a special Permit from Auckland Council to use the site. Please ensure you and your family respect its facilities & the public’s right to use them while we’re there. There’s a great playground, flying fox, skateboard park, a few BBQ tables, adjacent flat green space.  Toilets are near the skateboard area or outside Stardome Observatory (please do not ask inside unless you’re making a paid visit!).
GETTING THERE: An easy 4km off State Highway 1 (Greenlane exit). Here’s a map. Call MAXX on (09) 366-6400 or 0800 10 30 80 for public transport options.  Buses stop outside the park gates; a train station’s not too far away if you can arrange for pick-up.
PARKING: Our Permit restricts parking to the public roads around the site, eg, Manukau Road, etc. The on-site playground & Stardome car parks are for the general public’s use only unless you have injured or disabled passengers (not the “lots of children” excuse!). Your co-operation is needed to avoid risking future permits.
ORGANISER: Michelle Pepper  peppertime@xnet.co.nz 021 213 4072   Please only contact if absolutely necessary or volunteering.

2012 Homeschool Conference

Give your homeschooling some direction!

If your children are coming up to secondary level, we have a range of providers coming along to give a summary of what their particular curriculum/program can do for you.

John Oehley has a workshop that will be covering different aspects of Career Planning/Guidance for today’s complex employment options/choices, while Erena and Judith will be demystifying the Cambridge International Examination process!

If your children are still in the primary/middle school years, you may be interested in doing something totally different, something that you may never have thought about doing before! Come and hear what Margaret, Cally and Johanna have to show for their many years of homeschooling experience!

FINAL CALL TO BOARD THE EXEMPTION TRAIN!

Registrations close (no exceptions) 4pm Sunday 22 January, earlier if capacity is reached

The Exemption Process – The Ministry’s Perspective

a forum presented by the Ministry of Education in association with Auckland Home Educators Inc
Wednesday 25 January 2012 – 6.45pm to 9pm
at Ministry of Education, Level 3, Eden 5 Building, 12-18 Normanby Road, Mt Eden
Cost: AHE Members – free  /  Non-AHE Members – $3 per person (please bring correct cash)
To legally home educate in NZ, a parent/guardian must obtain a “Certificate of Exemption from Enrolment at a Registered School” for each child.
This is not available or required before the child’s 6th birthday.
This Forum aims to clarify a process which can cause some anxious moments!
Be guided through the application document by the staff who handle them.
Gain knowledge to write yours with confidence or help others to prepare theirs.
Primary, secondary and special needs considerations will be covered.
Support groups may wish to be represented to be up with the Ministry’s current approach.
Although staff are unable to go through your individual draft, this is certainly an opportunity to ask questions.

Remember! Local Ministry staff are not responsible for the Government’s imposition of this legal requirement.
This is not an appropriate time to question that issue.  Nor is it the place to discuss your personal educational experiences or philosophy.
ENTRY IS BY PRE-REGISTRATION ONLY (SEE BELOW)
CLOSE-OFF IS 4PM SUNDAY 22 JANUARY OR EARLIER WHEN CAPACITY IS REACHED
Early registration is advised for this popular session.  Places are limited by room capacity.  Please register only if you can commit to being there.  Government building security means an advance attendance list must be supplied.  Avoid the embarrassment and disappointment of being denied entry if you’re not on that list!  Building doors will be unmanned after 7.10pm so entry will be unavailable after that – no exceptions!
