HSLDA: Wunderlich children returned to parents with conditions

BREAKING news from the HSLDA: The Wunderlich children have been returned to their parents on the condition that the parents send them to a state school. The parents were told that if they refused this offer they could lose permanent custody of their children.
Thank you for your prayers and support! Pray now that the family regains full custody of the children.
The fight is far from over in Germany. More details to come as to how you can take action.

Update:

Wunderlich children home, but…

Dirk and Petra Wunderlich’s four children are home. Today, Darmstadt Family Court Judge Malkmus returned Machsejah, Joshua, Hananjah, and Serajah to their parents after they agreed to send their children to a state school. Faced with permanently losing custody of their children, the Wunderlichs had no choice.

We are glad the children are home where they belong.

They should never have been taken.

Dozens of supporters gathered outside the courthouse to show solidarity with the Wunderlich family and told HSLDA that the children were all smiles as they were reunited with their parents after 21 days in captivity. Dirk and Petra asked me to pass on their deep gratitude for your support.

Their lawyer told us that your message was heard loud and clear by German judges, the youth workers, and policy makers. At this time it is no longer necessary to contact German officials.

The Wunderlichs’ fight will continue until complete custody is restored and they are permitted to homeschool in peace—either in Germany or elsewhere.

In the meantime, Thomas and Marit Schaum, a family we recently told you about, face a criminal trial in a few weeks over homeschooling. Prosecutor Joachim Schnitzer Ling is demanding the parents each go to jail for six months.

Germany’s national policy of persecuting homeschooling families must stop. HSLDA is planning to continue the fight for freedom and for the rights of thousands of others in Germany and around the world to homeschool their children. Stay tuned for more action in support of the Wunderlichs and the Schaums in the coming days.

We invite you to stand with us and the Wunderlichs, Schaums, and other persecuted homeschool families worldwide. By joining HSLDA, you empower us to protect homeschool freedom in the U.S. and expand our work in the global battle for freedom.

Standing with your for liberty,
Michael Farris
HSLDA Founder and Chairman

HSLDA: Help the Wunderlich family

HSLDA's International News -- Around the Globe

Dear International Home Education Leaders,

Please see the following message regarding ways to assist the Wunderlich family in Germany:

Dear friends of educational freedom:

The story of the Wunderlich family has moved many of us, and we are in contact with the family. We’ve been thinking of ways how to help, and Mr. Wunderlich told us that he agrees with the advice of the HSLDA.  See their article.

We encourage you to take action and to write lots of e-mails to the German authorities listed on the website of HSLDA (see contact information here).  Please also visit and help to make known the new created website for the  family: http://wunderlich-children.com/.

Furthermore Dirk Wunderlich is asking for your support on Thursday, September 19th: At
13.30 pm there will be a court hearing in Darmstadt. On «Mathildenplatz» you’ll find a park next to the Court house which is ideal for a gathering with as many European Homeschoolers as possible. Please let us know in a short e-mail if there would be any persons who are willing to travel to Darmstadt on that date, so we can ask the authorities for permission. It’s not clear yet if the trial is open to the public or not.

We ask you to spread this message to as many persons and organisations as possible, and as well through the social media.

If you would like to contact the Wunderlich family, here is the father’s address: dirk.wun@googlemail.com

Kind regards

HSLDA: Take action today–help the Wunderlichs get their kids back!

HSLDA Founder and Chairman Mike Farris meets with the Wunderlich family during the Global Home Education Conference held in Berlin, Germany in October 2012. Farris is asking homeschoolers to contact German officials on behalf of the Wunderlichs.
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,

Dirk and Petra Wunderlich have told me that they are greatly encouraged by the support they are receiving from their fellow homeschoolers. (If you haven’t read the heartbreaking story of the raid and removal of their children, click here.)

Will you help us expand our efforts to communicate our grave concern over the abuse of this family’s human rights?
Today we want to let the German government know in no uncertain terms that this action against the Wunderlichs is not acceptable. Please call and email the German Embassy in Washington, D.C. (Already contacted them? That’s OK—contact them again.)And let’s expand our reach—there are nine German consulates in key cities across the U.S. Let’s call them, too!

Note: Calls are answered first in German followed by English (stay on the line).

When you call, you can express the following:
  • You are shocked and dismayed at the German actions in sending a SWAT team to remove the Wunderlich children.
  • A UN rapporteur has criticized Germany for its harsh treatment of homeschoolers in his 2006 report on the German education system (see paragraphs 62 and 93 (g) of the report).
  • Germany authorities should immediately release the Wunderlich children to their parents.
  • Germany should promptly change its law to permit homeschooling to comply with its obligations under international law.
Freedom isn’t free! We can’t advance freedom around the world, or defend it here at home, without your help!

Join HSLDA today!

Thank you for your concern and care for this precious family. Stay tuned as we continue to work for the  release of these homeschooled children and support the family. HSLDA is helping with the legal efforts to reunite this family. You can join with us to fight for the Wunderlichs with your membership or a donation to the Homeschool Freedom Fund .

Children Seized in Shocking Raid

“… in what has been called a “brutal and vicious act,” a team of 20 social workers, police officers, and special agents stormed a homeschooling family’s residence near Darmstadt, Germany, forcibly removing all four of the family’s children (ages 7-14). The sole grounds for removal were that the parents, Dirk and Petra Wunderlich, continued to homeschool their children in defiance of a German ban on home education…Authorities even took the children’s passports, making it impossible for the family to escape—a violation of a number of human rights guaranteed to them by the European Convention of Human Rights, said HSLDA Chairman and Founder Michael Farris.”

Email from the White House regarding the Romeike Family and Homeschooling

I just received this email from the White House:
Official White House Response to Immediate Action Requested for Romeikes—Grant Permanent Legal Status to Persecuted German Homeschool Family

What We Have to Say About the Romeikes Family and Homeschooling

Thank you for your petition.

The We the People Terms of Participation explain that “the White House may decline to address certain procurement, law enforcement, adjudicatory, or similar matters properly within the jurisdiction of federal departments or agencies, federal courts, or state and local government.” To the extent that these petitions request a particular law enforcement or adjudicatory action, or address a matter before the courts, we cannot issue a comment.

But while we can’t comment on this particular issue, we know that homeschooling is a popular option for many parents pursuing high academic standards for their children. Homeschooling can provide young people with the resources and attention they need to succeed academically, and we understand why their parents value this freedom.
