From the HSLDA: Please help the Romeikes

Help the Romeikes—in Two Easy Steps!

Protect homeschool freedom and ask the Obama administration to grant asylum to the Romeikes >>

Dear Leaders,

We have a major case going that involves the Romeike family, a homeschool family who had to flee Germany to avoid large fines, probably the loss of their children, and even jail time. They came to the U.S. and asked for asylum. Although they won at the trial level, the United States government wasn’t happy with that decision and appealed to the Board of Immigration Appeals and won.

We have appealed to the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, and oral arguments will be held in about a month. Mike Farris will argue on behalf of the family.

You may be asking, other than our concern for our brothers and sisters who are denied the freedom to homeschool in other parts of the world, could this case impact homeschooling in my state?

Mike Smith is HSLDA’s president.

Very good question! The answer is that it shouldn’t, but because Eric Holder, the Attorney General, has argued that homeschooling is not a fundamental right, it could.

If the Sixth Circuit agrees with the government, this could be a major blow to U.S. homeschooling freedom.

At least 34 state legislatures have recognized the right to homeschool via legislation and several of these states have provided unparalleled freedom. The legislatures did this because they assumed parents had a fundamental right—the highest level of rights we recognize in law—to homeschool.

Our opponents are waiting in the wings to go back into these legislatures and pass new laws to require minimum teacher qualifications, curriculum content control, and extensive government oversight of homeschooling. A federal court ruling that fails to recognize parents have a fundamental right to choose homeschooling would open the door for them to start that process.

So, I’m asking you do two things:

1. Sign the White House petition* on behalf of the Romeike family, and then, (People outside the USA can also sign this petition)

2. Ask your members and constituents to sign the petition as well, and to pray for the case and the family. Feel free to either forward my email or use the press release and/or news article for background. Graphics and photos of the family are available in the Media section of our Romeike page.

By petitioning through whitehouse.gov, it is our hope that President Obama will recognize the unpopularity of the Attorney General’s position and grant asylum to the family. White House petitions that receive over 100,000 signatures within 30 days are guaranteed a response by the administration (other petition sites have no such guarantee). Anyone 13 years or older with an email address can sign the petition.

This is a precedent-setting case that could impact future homeschool liberties in the United States and around the world. Please act now.

Thank you for your help for this family. If you have any questions or comments, please get back to me.

Sincerely,

Mike Smith
President

* P.S. The White House petition requires only your first and last names and an email address (does not need to be your primary email account). The zip field is optional. And remember, anyone in your family, 13 years or older, who has an email account can sign the petition.

We should never let fear of the government stop us from standing up for what is right.

Home Schoolers Uwe and Hannelore Romeike Need Your Help NOW!

By CHQ Staff | 3/21/13

A family of modern-day Pilgrims needs your urgent assistance. You may have heard of the Romeike family; Uwe and Hannelore Romeike were persecuted for homeschooling in Germany — where for homeschooling their kids, they faced prison, fines, and loss of parental rights in their home country.

Uwe and Hannelore RomeikeA few years ago, they fled to the United States and received asylum from an immigration judge, only to have the Board of Immigration Appeals overturn the judge’s ruling and order them deported. The Home School Legal Defense Association is appealing their case to the 6th Circuit right now.

The Home School Legal Defense Association is working to build a groundswell of support for the Romeikes, and we urge you to help these modern day Pilgrims, fleeing persecution for freedom in America.

The Home School Legal Defense Association has put-up a petition on the White House web page.

We at CHQ urge you to help them get the word out for signatures on the petition (they need 100,000 signatures in 30 days in order to receive a response), and also to help get the word out in any other way you can think of – tweets, Facebook, blog posts for example – that the Romeike family needs help NOW.

GHEC 2012—Success Beyond Measure

From: HSLDA’s Around the Globe newsletter

GHEC 2012—Success Beyond Measure

200 people from 26 countries and six continents gathered in Berlin, Germany in November 2012 to participate in the first-ever Global Home Education Conference. The event was a success beyond expectations as participants heard from leading German politicians and home education advocates. The event re-energized the beleaguered home education movement in Germany and provided a platform for the release of the Berlin Declaration, which calls on all governments to respect and protect the fundamental right of parents to home educate.

Conference Materials Available to All—Free!

The conference materials are being added to the GHEC2012 website and you are invited to benefit from these materials. Listen to German Parliament Member Patrick Meinhardt, HSLDA Founder Michael Farris, HSLDA Attorney Michael Donnelly, Classical Conversations Founder Leigh Bortins and many, many others. Click here to browse over 30 individual sessions packed full of tremendous value and encouragement.

If you are able, would you consider a small donation to help cover the funds to maintain the GHEC website and to help close a budget gap for the conference? Your support is greatly appreciated and will be used to support homeschooling freedom for many around the world!

Homeschool Leader Shares His Views on the GHEC

I also invite you to read this article written by Minnesota Association of Christian Home Educators Executive Director David Watkins as he describes his experience at the Berlin conference as being “Among True Champions.”

Steve Rose – The parallel universe of home-schooled students

Here is a great article on Home schooling in Kansas

The three superintendents of the three major school districts in Johnson County, Kansas,  say they have little contact with home-schoolers, even though they are required to provide certain services, if requested. None even knew how many home-schooled students are in their districts.

But out there is a parallel system that runs counter to everything these superintendents practice on a day-to-day basis.

The fact that it apparently is a successful system is counter-intuitive. But if it did not usually work, and if it did not fulfill religious values, home-schooling would not be the fastest- growing form of education in America.

Homeschooler’s neighbor sparks social services case

A Colorado homeschooling mother has won a social-services case sparked by a neighbor’s complaint about the family that escalated when a social worker did a “drive-by” and concluded they were planning to flee.

A neighbor of the single mother, whose identity has been withheld to protect her family’s privacy, tipped off social services that the mother had been homeschooling several children, according to the Home School Legal Defense Association.

When an investigator arrived at her door in the fall of 2011, the mother immediately contacted the HSLDA, the nation’s premiere legal defense fund dedicated to parents’ right to home educate.

The mother was instructed by HSLDA attorney Mike Donnelly to ask the social worker to leave, and the social worker complied. But this was only the beginning of the mother’s ordeal.

The social worker did not close the case and continued to investigate the mother’s right to homeschool on the grounds that some of her children have learning disabilities that public schools would be better suited to handle.

Donnelly argued against social services’ assertion that a traditional school setting is better equipped to meet the needs of special-needs children.

Many families homeschool their children who have learning disabilities because they find that the children’s needs are better met in a one-on-one homeschool setting,” Donnelly said. “Research shows that this is true. It is intolerable that someone would question a family’s right to homeschool simply because their children have a learning disability.”
