NZ children slip in world maths rankings

Fall from 13th to 22nd blamed on teacher training and disruptions

Class disruptions and a lack of exposure to algebra and geometry are just some of the issues being linked to New Zealand slipping from 13th to 22nd in OECD maths ratings.

A three-part Ministry of Education report on maths class learning environments was released last week. It is based on the findings in the OECD Programme for International Student Assessment 2012 (PISA). The programme happens every three years and evaluates 15-year-old students’ skills and knowledge in maths, reading and science.

This latest report identifies that the drop in maths ranking is due to an accumulation of factors in regards to student opportunities to learn, teaching strategy and student behaviour.

Key findings include:

• 60 per cent of students indicated they had never heard of mathematical concepts such as congruent figures, radicals and divisors.

• Kiwi students were less exposed to formal maths – such as algebra and geometry – than students in the comparable nations of Australia, Canada, Britain and Singapore.

• 40 per cent of students reported that noise and disorder and students not listening to the teacher occurred in most maths classes.

Maths teachers with degree-level qualifications are more likely to be teaching in urban, high socio-economic schools, and students at these schools have higher exposure to complex concepts and formal maths.

Secondary Principals Association president Tom Parsons said the results stemmed from a national shortage of teachers with adequate mathematics training.

“There is such a demand for teachers who come out of university with maths qualifications that they can go wherever they like,” he said. “Usually this is high socio-economic urban areas.”

New Zealand Association of Mathematics Teachers president Gillian Frankcom said the reason for the decline was not clear cut. She said that since 2009, all secondary school teacher graduates had completed a comprehensive maths component and teacher incompetence could not be singled out for student failure.
Quiz: Three math questions (answers below)

1. Solve: 5(t – 4) = 15
2. Simplify: 6(x – 5) – 2(x+1)
3. Solve: 3x(x+4) = 0

Return Domenic Johansson to His Parents – putting pressure in Sweden

To create some more pressure in Sweden…

It say’s something like,

If the CPS didn’t exist, I would still be able to smile for real, and be able to say mom and dad for real, and I would live in a real family.

I am one of thousand children in Sweden who are living in a state of emotional torture, because of severe corruption within the CPS system.

The last thing I said to my father was, “What I fear the most is to go back to the foster family”, that was November 2010, now the connection between us is totally broken..

Plz share, and if possible, translate and copy, perhaps fix the grammar a bit.

All the best and so much more!

Videos of the different Homeschooling Philosophies and Successes

Recently I wrote two letters to the National Office about two natural learning exemption applications that were not understood by the local offices (Lower Hutt and Auckland). As most of you know, now, there is a new lady processing exemptions in Auckland who is just learning about all of the different approaches. So we need to be a little understanding but at the same time we can use current exemption applications as a training tool for her.

Part of an email from Lucy (National MoE Office):

“Your points raised are very valid and I would like them to be addressed. At our next meeting with the regional homeschooling staff I am going to show staff a video of the different homeschooling philosophies and successes to help with the awareness and understanding of different philosophies when processing applications. If you know of any short videos that you think would be good, please do not hesitate to send me the links.”

Here are some links people have shared with me so far:

Please share below your favourite SHORT videos to help with the awareness and understanding of different philosophies when processing applications. I would like to just choose a few out of all the ones shared that show the variety of different approaches to home education.

Convoconnect: NZ online language tutoring platform / tutor directory

Inline images 1

Good afternoon,

My name is Josh Parlane, and I am the Co-Founder of Convoconnect.

Convoconnect is an online language tutoring platform / tutor directory that was recently founded here in NZ.

I am contacting you as I believe our website will be of interest to all Kiwi parents who are trying to find a language tutor for themselves or for their children.   It would be much appreciated if you could please mention convoconnect to your community, as we truly believe it will help many New Zealand homeschool students.

The problem many families face when they live in small / rural towns in New Zealand is that it is extremely difficult to find local language tutors.  Their children might be studying a language at  school and need a tutor to help assist their learning, or their children might attend schools where languages are not offered.  We have spoken to many people who currently face this situation. In some cases parents need to drive over one hour into town, or even to another town if they want to get tutoring.  This extra travel is very expensive and time consuming for parents who live busy lives.

Convoconnect can help overcome these barriers.  The main purpose of convoconnect is to allow students, travellers, and business people a way of learning a language online.  As mentioned above, many families live busy lives and have limited disposable income to spend on travel costs.  Learning online these days is very realistic and just as good as learning in person.  Costs are more affordable for the student compared to other private tutors too as the teacher doesn’t have to factor their own travel costs into their prices.  All teachers work independently on convoconnect.

Students can read teacher profiles, watch their introduction videos, choose a teacher of their choice (depending on the student’s budget), view the teacher’s lesson types, see the tutor’s availability on an electronic calendar, and book a timeslot.  Many teachers even offer FREE or cheap trial lessons.  All lessons then take place on Skype.

If you have any questions at all please feel free to ask – I hope you can see the benefit that convoconnect will offer your community.

Thanks and kind regards,

Josh.
