Homeschooling is available for parents who want to educate their children at home, provided they maintain a standard of education equivalent to that of a registered school. Parents need to obtain approval from the Ministry of Education to homeschool their children during the years of compulsory schooling (between 6-16 years). They are given an annual grant to help with the cost of learning materials.

  1. my 14 yr old daughter has been indifintely expelled from Tauranga Girls College i am seeking alternative education for her as she has numerous issues that need Attention example:Teenage suicide,The loss of her Twin Cousin,Domestic issue where we spent Time in numerous Womens Refugee Threw out the North Island,Being Abused by a Adult male.I would really appreciate any help you can give me for my Daughter,For she has regular counselling and a social worker that works besides her to help Overcome most of the Issues Yours faithfully Tania Turei

  4. hi i have a 13year old daughter with learning dificulties we have struggled for a long time with the school system and have decided to homeschool her before she starts college this is all very new to me and i am really in need of some support or a group in our area that will help me with this new change to my daughters education. Please help im totally confused as to what to do next and what i am suppose to do.

  7. Hi can anyone tell me the age cut off point for home schooling? My son is now 17-years and is currently in a polytechnic foundations class which is not working out for him. High school did not go smoothly with lots of truanting, changes in schools, and various ‘youth services’ interventions which basically moved him from one service to another.
    I actually wish I had taken the home schooling option back then but am wondering if it is too late at this age? My son has anxiety issues which interfere with his ability to focus in a classroom environment; he feels inadequate compared with peers who have achieved their levels and now realises how important these early qualifications are. Can you advise? Many thanks for your time.

  8. Isobelle, children have to attend school in New Zealand between the ages of 6 and 16. So because your son is now 17 he can do whatever he likes. So you can pull him out of the polytechnic class anytime you want to and teach him at home. You could focus on the subjects that will help him with his future in getting into studies or a job.
