Homeschooling Family to Family Highlighted in PBS news show

Houston, Texas – Jan 12, 2007 On this week’s PBS show Religion and Ethics Newsweekly, Lucky Severson examines efforts by some religious families to create a system of homeschooling. The show runs at different times on each PBS station. The local affiliate usually lists it in their schedule under Religion and Ethics. This will also be streamed on the website along with a copy of the script.

About the Filming:
With shots of homeschoolers ice skating, working in their biology co-op and practicing their debating skills, the show will highlight the various options homeschooling children have in today’s world of computers, co-ops and businesses willing to open their doors to homeschoolers.
Interviews with Dr. Bruce Shortt and Dr. Voddie Baucham, both homeschooling dads, and Jube Dankworth, National Director of Homeschooling Family to Family, an organization whose mission is to bring one million more children into homeschooling, this week’s Religion and Ethics takes a practical look at the real world of homeschooling.

About Homeschooling Family to Family

Our monthly E-newsletter for mentors, our web-site materials including downloadable articles and brochures will help allay a new family’s fears and give the family mentoring tools. In addition, we are providing DVD’s and CD’s to local support groups for distribution to their members to help each family make an informed decision to home school. Home-schooling mentors will support new families as they travel the home-school road with its joys, bumps, discoveries and exhilaration.

Israel Wayne discusses homeschooling on The Harvest Show

http://www.harvest-tv.com/video/VOD_GetShow.cfm?ShowID=198

Greetings!

8 August 2007 I appeared as a guest on The Harvest Show, which is a nationally syndicated television variety show with a potential viewership of over 46 million homes in North America alone.

I come on at the half hour point, so you’ll have to wade through the news and the sports guy to get to me. To watch the show, click HERE http://www.harvest-tv.com/video/VOD_GetShow.cfm?ShowID=198 and look for the August 8th broadcast.

To my knowledge this is the first time that LeSEA Broadcasting has ever done a special feature on home education, so this was a real answer to prayer.

The two hosts who interviewed me, Kelly and Debra are both very nice ladies.

Debra Maffett is a former Miss America (1983) and she talked with me a lot off the air about my book and our magazine. This is the first year her son, who she was homeschooling with the help of tutors, is going to be enrolled in a private Christian school.

Kelly Morgan used to be an actor (she is from NYC) and she appeared on television shows like Schoolhouse Rock which was a GenX era show that I remember. It was never very popular with homeschoolers, for some reason. 🙂 She also appeared on Sesame Street and other shows.

There were a number of engaging conversations I was blessed to have with hosts and staff off the air regarding home education and it was clear that this topic was new territory for them as a network.

I trust that the Lord will allow the broadcast to reach as many people as need to see it, and hopefully it will light a spark of interest.

God bless
Israel Wayne

God Uses Dr. Moore to Light the Flame

Dr. Raymond S. Moore passed away Friday, July 13, 2007, at the age of
91 after having suffered a massive stroke on Father’s Day. He is survived
by his wife Bernice Reid Moore; brother Charles and two sisters Loraine
Webster and Helena Reid; son Dennis Moore; and daughter Kathie Moore
Kordenbrock, her husband and three sons.

In the early 1980’s, Dr. Raymond Moore and his late wife, Dorothy,
discovered the truth that children learn better if they are educated
later than earlier. In 1972, Dr. Moore wrote an article for Harpers
Magazine on the dangers of early schooling. Reader’s Digest picked up
this article and distributed it to many more millions of people. Dr.
Moore struck a chord. More and more people began to doubt the American
education system.

Dr. Moore ended up writing a book called “Better Late than Early”,
which served as one of the foundational books for the modern homeschool
movement. He wrote several more books.

In 1982, he was interviewed twice by James Dobson, with Focus on the
Family. These shows on homeschooling created a spark in the Christian
community. Millions of people were exposed for the first time to the
thought of teaching their children themselves. And it made sense,
especially in light of the failing public school system. God’s Holy
Spirit worked in the individual hearts of families over the country at
that time and the modern homeschool movement was born.

Dr. Moore has said??Dr. Dobson’s attention made a great deal of
differenced. He said he got three times as many listener letters from
our appearances that he had over gotten from any program before. ?? Dr.
Moore did further ground-breaking research on parent-directed education,
which helped to fuel the homeschool movement. He was the first voice
heard in the major media advocating homeschooling.

I remember in the mid 1980’s when Dr. Raymond Moore called me and was
so thankful that Mike Farris established the Home School Legal Defense
Association. Up until that time he felt like he had the burden to help
these families legally, but he did not have the legal training.
Nonetheless, Dr. Raymond Moore faithfully traveled to many court
hearings to testify as an expert witness to the academic statistics and
success of homeschooling. He also testified in many state legislatures
when bills were introduced to legalize homeschooling.

I remember in the 1980’s when Dr. Raymond Moore and Dorothy would call
me and ask for the latest legal update, and I would tell them about the
cases and legal conflicts we had around the country for homeschooling.
They would write the report in their newsletter about our work and how
the legal battle was going. They encouraged everyone to join Home School
Legal Defense Association.

Although there was a parting of the ways for a while, Dr. Raymond Moore
began calling me to ask how I was doing in the last few years. He
explained too that he had no bitterness on some of the splits that
occurred earlier, and that he forgave everyone and admitted that he had
handled it wrongly. When I questioned him about his faith and his
relationship with Jesus Christ, he testified strongly to that
relationship, his belief in the Gospel, and his assurance of salvation
by grace.

I believe I’ll see him again someday and am thankful for his life of
work, especially his research and advocacy for homeschooling.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Raymond S. &
Dorothy N. Moore Memorial Scholarship Fund at Weimar Institute,
Weimar,
CA 95736.

Sincerely,
Chris Klicka

12 November 2007 HSLDA – Thanks and two new email addresses

======================================================================
From the HSLDA E-lert Service…
======================================================================
November 12, 2007

Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:

Thank you for your emails to the Committee Members of the Committees
for Education, Science, Youth, and Sport. As a result of your
diligence, each committee member received over 2000 emails, urging
them to legalize homeschooling and to adopt the amendments of the
Romanian Home School Association.

The Romanian homeschoolers are excited about the support and hopeful
that the international outcry will enable them to have the legal right to homeschool in Romania through this new federal law.

Therefore, you can stop emailing these members of the Romanian
Parliament at this time. Their email boxes are quite full!

We will notify you in the future if there is any need to continue
contacting these Committee Members, but we think this will be
sufficient.

Gabriel Curcubet, president of the Romanian Home Schooling
Association, was able to obtain the email addresses of two
undersecretaries of state. He believes it would be advantageous to
their cause to send an email, or a copy of the email you sent to the
Committee Members, to them.

You can say:
Honorable Undersecretary of State,

“We respectfully urge you to consider the petition of the Romanian
Home Schooling Association regarding home schooling. We ask you to
include home schooling in the new educational law.”

You can also include a paragraph about the social and academic success of your homeschool.

Zvetlana Preoteasa, Undersecretary of State for K-12 Education:
zvetlana.preoteasa@min.edu.ro

Gabriella Pasztor, Undersecretary of State for communication with
Parliament: pasztor@mec.edu.ro

Thank you, once again, for your response in helping these brothers and sisters in Romania as they work for their freedom to homeschool.

Sincerely,
Christopher J. Klicka

9 November 2007 – HSLDA — Urgent Email needed for Romanian Homeschoolers

================================
From the HSLDA E-lert Service…

November 9, 2007

HSLDA–Urgent Email needed for Romanian Homeschoolers

Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:

Homeschooling is not legal in Romania, even though the homeschool movement is steadily growing. Home School Legal Defense Association has been working with Gabriel Curcubet, president of the Romanian Home Schooling Association, in order to convince the Romanian government to specifically recognize and legalize homeschooling.

For now, we have achieved a way for homeschooling to exist, but this solution is only temporary. A recent change in Romania’s leadership has given an opportunity for homeschooling to become legal.

The Romanian homeschoolers have requested that homeschoolers from America and around the world email the members of the two education committees in Parliament immediately. The new Ministry of Education wants to review the Education Law projects and to complete this national education law in November. Therefore, time is of the essence.

Will you please take a moment and send an email to help our brothers and sisters in Romania enjoy the freedom we have in America?

ACTION REQUESTED

Please send an email which states:

“Honorable member of the Committee for Education, Science, Youth, and Sport:

“We respectfully urge you to consider the petition of the Romanian Home Schooling Association regarding homeschooling. We ask you to include homeschooling in the new educational law as they recommend.”

Also include a paragraph about the social and academic success of homeschooling in your family.

To email the members of these Committees, please go to http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=4527 ; this webpage will enable you to write one email which will then be sent to all the members of the Education Committee of both the Chamber of the Deputies and the Senate.

By sending this one email through our website, 35 members of parliament will receive your individual message from your email address.

You can send your email through November 28, 2007.

Thank you very much for taking a few moments to make a difference for the homeschoolers in Romania.

Sincerely,
Christopher J. Klicka

Home Schooling to Be Legalized in Year 2010

http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/nation/2007/08/113_8464.html

Home Schooling to Be Legalized in Year 2010

By Kim Tae-jong
Staff Reporter

In 2010, a test system for home schooling will be introduced prior to its official launch in 2015. The system will allow parents to teach their children at home without sending them to school. Scholastic credits will be given to children if they pass the appropriate exams.

The plan was contained in a mid-and long-term education reform plan the Presidential Committee on Education Innovation unveiled Thursday.

The committee also proposed changing the current academic year system at elementary, middle and high schools by 2015 at the earliest.

“The report is the second of its kind following the one in 1995. It will serve as a roadmap for educational policies for the current and next administration,” said Jeong Hong-seop, chairpman of the committee. It will be finalized after a public hearing next month.

According to the plan, elementary and middle schools can integrate school grades, which allows students from different grades to take the same classes together.

At high schools, the current school year system will be completely abolished and students can choose school subjects and take courses suitable for them as university students do.

The plan also includes the regular renewal of a teacher’s certification, which aims to improve the quality of teachers. Teachers who fail to pass a renewal test will lose their position.

Current teachers colleges and colleges of education will be abolished and a graduate school will open to those with bachelors degrees, the committee also proposed.

Other plans include; offering study time up to one year to teachers to help them offer better education to their students; the establishment of English-only schools; and a Korean language teacher certificate for foreigners.
