Tae-kwon-Do world championships in North Korea

Johann Lankroon, special needs son of Peggy and Harry Landkroon from Hastings, has been invited to demonstrate Special Needs Tae-kwon-Do at the opening ceremony of the world championships in North Korea this September. It would be a world first, in fact New Zealand is the only country to officially train disabled students in this sport, and the purpose of the demonstration is to show the world how to train special needs students.

The hurdle at the moment is to raise enough money to get him and his parents there. (Obviously he can’t go on his own). Air New Zealand has come up with a free return ticket for Johann as far as Beijing. A lot more is still needed, and to this end an application for an AMP scholarship has been placed. Literally thousands of people have applied for this scholarship and the winner is decided by popular vote. Last year’s winner had about 11,000 votes, coming from all over the world!!!
And so we need contacts – lots and lots of them who will vote for Johann by simply going to

Bay of Plenty Homeschoolers Expo

Last chance for anyone wishing to register an entry (or seven…..) into this Expo – the closing date for registrations is this Friday (3rd June).  It will not matter if you don’t end up entering on the day, but we do need to finalise numbers this week.  We have decided to make a few changes to the payment/registration process – you will need to register as an entrant by this Friday, you will need to confirm (by making payment) your entries (which may well have changed by then, you may wish to retract from some categories, enter into others, swap some, etc.) by Friday 17th and, if required, have your work ready for pre-judging (Composition – Story only at this stage) by Monday 20th.  All other entries will need to be left at the hall by 10:00am Friday 24th.  All work must be of the entrant’s own doing, and must have been completed during the preceding 12 month period.

Email us at blair.family@xtra.co.nz to be put n the Expo mailing list.

Auckland Home Education Conference: Saturday 11 June 2011

STOP PRESS

  • You asked: We listened.
  • You said you wanted more information about home educating
  • You said you wanted a wider variety of topics
  • You said you wanted the option of attending other workshops running at the same time as the main speaker

That seemed rather a tall ask only two weeks out from a major conference BUT, with the generous help of a number of volunteers, we have done it!

Firelight Saturday Workshops are all go!

It is the 11th of June, 2011

  • 15 new workshops, taking the total to over TWENTY (our largest number of workshops ever!)
  • A wide array of topics
  • A wonderful bunch of workshops speakers – including one lady travelling all the way from Timaru

The Workshops cover three main tracks:

  • PRACTICAL – the hands on nitty gritty and ‘how to’ info
  • SECONDARY/TERTIARY – how to be prepared for this crucial time plus some of the options are available (includes important Cambridge update re 2012)
  • SPECIAL INTEREST (my favourite!)  – this selection of goodies will be the clincher for you, covering everything from the Wholefood Revolution to Sensory Integration Therapies to Aspergers and much more

If you are home educating, this conference is now even more unmissable!
The workshops run parallel to all the Keynote sessions so you have the option of either hearing Dr Wile or attending any workshop that suits you.

As well as the workshops, the conference also features:

  • Spot prizes
  • FREE Variety Concert on the Friday night – come and support our fellow home educators
  • 11 Vendors – our biggest number ever!
  • Optional Kids’ Programme
  • FREE Morning and Afternoon tea
  • And so much more

Take a look here at all the workshop titles:

But wait, there’s more!

Because of all the new workshops, we have extended the Earlybird deadline until FRIDAY 3 JUNE to give you time to make the necessary arrangements.

Please pass this onto anyone you know who is home educating or thinking of it – newbies, old hands, support groups, preschool organisations, Christian, non Christian alike, mums, dads etc.

Let’s make this conference the best Auckland conference ever! We look forward to seeing you there.
