URGENT

From Cynthia Hancox

URGENT: the Government has today introduced an amendment to the Education and Training (System Reform) Bill which would introduce mandatory reporting and assessment for home educating families, and open the door to other regulations also. This Bill is being debated in Parliament this week, and we need to take urgent action by writing to MPs etc asking them to oppose it. Full information on my website.

I appreciate that the article is a long read, but this is the most significant change to home education legislation since 1989, and it has far-reaching consequences, but was introduced in a way that bypassed Select Committee and consultation processes.

Please read, act and share.

Here’s my two cents 🙂 … target any and all MPs but the most influential to target are the coalition partner MPs (Act and NZ First) and also the opposition MPs (Labour and Greens). Labour and Greens are already against the whole bill but as these are amendments they should be voted on separately which means we still need to get in touch with opposition MPs and ask them to vote against it. It doesn’t mean NOT contacting National MPs though – do that as well. They’re just the least likely to change their minds so if you need to be strategic about who/where you spend your time then do that.
Get your kids writing letters (actual paper ones are going to be better than emails when coming from a kid and adding pictures is a nice touch which gets more notice!) BUT can I suggest that this is the most important time to make sure we’ve all got our English writing skills and spelling up to par for the final copy 😉 It might not send the message we want otherwise lol

OK, the first wave is rolling through. The pressure is building and it’s not from the Gov’t but against it! Let’s all keep pushing. It’s so encouraging to see how many have taken action in the past 6 hours! Keep it up! Everyone do a little and it will make a BIG noise! If you have written to all the people you can as suggested, it’s a great opportunity for YOUR CHILDREN to write to a real audience! Don’t worry about perfection – it’s just the action that will shout loudly. In their words, have your children dictate, copy-write, type or draw their love and freedom to be homeschooled. Send it through to the Minister of Education, your local MP etc. Let’s hit them with it!!

  3. A comment made from another thread to add to what Sheena says above:

“I’m going to see if I can have a meeting with our member of parliament. Dont need them to control how I teach my child.”

Would be great to see lots of people doing this and take your children along with you.

  4. This is URGENT. We only have a few days to act. Bill is on third reading.

Read all of Cynthia Hancox’s post. Near the end she has links for MP’s etc to write to and bullet points of what we need to address in our letters.

Looks like there will be discussion today in Parliament on this bill. If you haven’t rung or emailed your MP do so this morning. Also ACT and NZ First along with Greens and Labour. And if you have time National MPs asking them to remove the last minute sections on Home schooling.

    Dear [MP],

As your constituent, I am writing as a matter of urgency to express my opposition to Amendment Paper 583 to the Education and Training (System Reform) Amendment Bill, particularly sections 5F and 51A.

I am very concerned that these amendments were introduced after the Select Committee process, which meant the public had no real opportunity to review them or provide feedback. If accepted, these changes could have a significant impact on homeschooling families. My concerns are listed below:

There has been NO consultation with national homeschooling representatives, despite many requests to the Ministry of Education and the Minister directly by individuals and community stakeholders.

The details are unclear and there are no limits. There is currently no information about: how often reports would be required, what assessments would look like or who would conduct them, how the information would be used. There is no requirement for consultation with the home educating community when any changes are made.

Blanket requirements would severely disadvantage families with neurodivergent or disabled children, many of whom choose homeschooling because the standard education system has not been able to meet their children’s needs safely or appropriately.

Rigid compliance requirements and prescribed assessment processes would undermine the individualised approach that is often the main reason these families choose homeschooling in the first place.

I am also concerned that the amendment creates broad powers for future homeschooling regulations to be introduced without proper consultation with the families affected by them.

I am not opposed to regulatory requirements, but they need to be flexible, relevant and made with consultation. I therefore urge you to oppose the Amendment in Parliament in order that a robust and proper consultation period can be implemented to support a transparent process that properly consults affected families before any further regulatory changes are made.

    Thank you for your consideration.

    Yours sincerely,
