Social Security (Benefit Categories and Work Focus) Amendment Bill: Best Scenario?

Social Security Bill and the Human Rights Commission  Please write a letter to the Select Committee and Human Rights Commission

Make A Submission

Do you want compulsory  preschool education

for 3 – 5 year olds

in addition to compulsory education for 6 – 16 year olds?

*******

Do you want it to be compulsory to have to enrol with a General Practitioner and to complete core WellChild/Tamariki Ora checks?

*******

“Do you believe YOU should be forced to send your children to Early Childhood Education (ECE)?
Then stand up for the beneficiaries who’ll be forced to do just that!

Otherwise, when they come for YOUR children, what will you say?”

*******

The Social Security (Benefit Categories and Work Focus) Amendment Bill 2012 is wanting to bring this in for all beneficiaries.

This legislation must be TOTALLY REJECTED — WHY?

In 1877 New Zealanders lost the freedom to educate our children at home without applying for permission. Our forefathers let us down by not standing up for their rights.

In 2012, will we be the generation that begins to lose the freedom to preschool our own children, to make our own decisions about health care, or to invest our time in our families above a job?

We say NO

Let us protect the children of Beneficiaries

Because this could extend to ALL children

if this passes

SPEAK NOW OR FOREVER HOLD YOUR PEACE

The Social Security (Benefit Categories and Work Focus) Amendment Bill sponsored by National MP Paula Bennett has been sent to a Government Select Committee. This means that people like you can make a submission (short or long) and have your say direct to the MP’s. And we want to help you every step of the way so as to make the task as simple as possible. The 1st reading in Parliament showed that only 19 MP’s need to change their vote to NO in order to defeat this bill. It is vital that as many people as possible show their support for beneficiaries and help to fight to overturn this Bill which, if passed, will mean beneficiaries children will have to:

  • attend 15 hours a week Early Childhood Education (ECE) from age 3

  • attend school from age five or six

  • enrol with a General Practitioner

  • complete core WellChild/Tamariki Ora checks

*******

“But this wont be all. Watch what will happen next. The Government will say that this is working so well for beneficiaries (and it wont be) that they will want it to apply to everyone on the WFF and Family Support. Then eventually ALL 3- 5 year olds in a few years time.”

  1. Wow, this is just disgusting. They are already doing this in some third world countries, and it’s a disgrace. It is clearly part of an agenda to separate children from parents and to break the family ties at the earliest age possible. And you are right, there is no question that this is merely a stepping stone – the next step is to mandate government intervention into the lives of babies of 1 year up, and then later, though unbelievable to us now, be assured that the next step will be to question the rights of the parent at all from birth. “After all…”. This has to be stopped, and as a matter of fact – for anyone who has studied law or history this will not sound at all extreme – the fact of the matter is that government should never be involved in mandating anything to parents. Children are under the care, protection, responsibility and rights of the parents, and the only thing that should be able to bar that is proven criminal liability on part of the parents, via the safety net of the jury system, immediate danger notwithstanding. If you allow this then your chances to reverse it are next to zero. Please keep this page updated with results. I’m so ashamed of my home country that it has allowed these patently corporate and frankly collectivist interests to dominate government legislation. There is absolutely no justifiable basis for which this could even dare to be suggested, except for an ulterior, and frankly sinister agenda. To mandate a law such as this across the country, while using as an example a few rare test cases where one might say it was necessary (I can’t imagine how they did that), is absurd. Bottom line, children need their parents. Physically, spiritually, and emotionally. There’s no question about it. All parents are home schoolers until age 6. Frankly in my own opinion government schools are an abomination and no child should be sent to a government prison training camp. Even private schools are not free to teach what their best minds deem is best to teach, and what the parents want taught. It is not a free market. Home schooling is the only way in my opinion that you can make sure they learn properly and grow up to be stable, healthy, strong adults. I’m free to have my opinion, since I don’t desire to force it on to anyone else – that doesn’t mean anyone should be in any way tolerant of those whose desires is the opposite – to force their ideas of how you should raise your family, indifferently, across a whole nation, just to satisfy some control freak power trip need to dominate the lives of people they don’t know and treat you like a statistic.

  2. I am totally opposed to the bill requiring compulsory schooling for children, at any age! There are a number of reasons that our children benefit from the secure environment of home and I find it outrages that people without any knowlegde of my children can tell me whats best for them.

  3. I am totally AGAINST forcing parents to put their children in day care so they can go back to work. I’m a mum of an 8month old little girl, who is adopted. When we got picked to adopt our little girl we were on a good income and hubby was working, at the time in a VERY stressful job, when he had a mental breakdown, made a very large mistake with some paper work and got let go. Now we’re on a sickness benefit. He’s a GREAT Dad, and does anything and everything he can for our baby. His condition means that he goes to sleep and can sleep for hours at a time, and even our baby screaming her lungs out will not wake him up. Winz are now telling me because he’s the main beneficiary that I need to be looking for work, and with his being like he is with his sleeping then I need to look at putting our daughter into day care. I’m not against working (so please don’t get that idea) what I AM against is Parents being forced to put their children into day care when their first 5 years are some of their most important, especially when you have children who are in situations like ours. DON’T make babies who are in similar situations have MORE abandonment issues than they already do.
I do believe the well child checks are VITAL to well being of our nations children. There are a number of these children who fall through the cracks already, and that support from our GP and plunket nurse etc have been absolutely valuable. Being a parent is stressful enough, with out being told how to raise your children, yet the well child checks are a great place to also have someone who is in a respected type position to say “hey you’re doing good” or give you the information you need if you have any problems.

  4. Thanks so much for this. I have made my submission. Glad there are lots of other people who feel passionately about this awful bill.

  5. I feel sick to the stomach that the importance of a bond between a parent and child has little value and recognition in the eyes of people that make any important decisions in this country. Clearly NZ is way off the mark with the way they are doing things, one of the highest youth suicide rates a clear indication that the way they are doing things is not working!!!!To think that the so called brains of this country see a solution in a further weakening in natural relationships between children and the people that in most cases love and support them as a good idea is disturbing! I have seen daycares, kids running around making their own way through life sensing abandonment and wondering when the people who love them will be returning? Locked away for hours on end from the stimulation of the real world….having little guidance and no one to answer their questions that continually race through their developing mind. No escape from the chaos and noise around them, no privacy or ability to work out life with any type of calm? There is no doubt that this ridiculous idea will lead to youth not relating or respecting the wealth of knowledge those older than them have to offer, why will they ever listen when they will be trained or conditioned to believe that from such a young age they don’t need too? My child had a horrible time in kindy and the brief time he spent in ECE, he asked me “Why do you keep leaving me there, you are gone for so long? It’s fun for you and they have heaps of toys and to play with…his response, “but I have played with all the toys, it is boring and I wait for you for hours, why do you leave me with them, your my mum not them, it’s your job to look after me not theirs!” I want to be with you! Now this led to me questioning what was important to me?clearly my child being happy!!!especially at such a young age, knowing life ahead is clearly already complicated enough! So I continued because that’s the trend of the times, this lead to his loss of appetite and uncontrollable crying when the term started again…clearly some children thrive in these places but how can children be forced into this situation, a clearly high stress emotionally disturbing place to be…how can this be a good idea? I am a dedicated single mother, I have looked after my son every day of his six years, I do not drink, I do not smoke, I do not take drugs, I do not expose my son to any situation where he will be endangered or exposed to anything like this, I keep a tidy home, teach him morals, care, respect and that he is secure in the love of his family, I teach him that he can rely on me! How else can I teach him to be reliable?have respect?value morals?not turn to drugs and alcohol?be secure?be responsible? Be a stable well rounded young man! By sending him to spend his formative years with a stranger that from year to year he will never see or have anything to do with again? What a terrifying freedom of choice to have taken away from the well meaning caring parents that do exist, all the research has shown this is a terrible idea? Also it is important to mention the reason I am a single parent was a decision I made to remove him from a lifestyle his father wanted to continue, this ridiculous increasingly normalised culture of drinking, smoking and general selfish behavior, why should I be punished for giving my son the best shot at turning out to be a happy, healthy human being? NZ government needs to acknowledge this stupid idea will cost them! Expect terrible statistics! Expect crime rates to increase at alarming rates! Expect youth to have even less respect for older generations…there will be no other outcome. What else can you expect from a system that teaches kids from the get go, no one listened to me so why the hell shall I listen to you? BREAKS MY HEART!

  6. This BILL is absolutely disgusting!!!! How dare this Govt do crap like that. ECE is not a place where teachers can provide tamariki with a safe environment! What fool believes that crap. Big firms like Kidicorp are rubbing their hands together – the money they make from it will be insurmountable. They are becoming the “POWERHOUSE” of ECE in this country. A force soon to be reckoned with. They have monopolized the sector. Many great teachers (fully qualified) are being overlooked for non qualified and Primary School teachers. Why? Because they don’t have to pay as much for a fully qual’ed ECE teacher. OMG! This is only going to get worse. Not better people…. The Rights of Parents is being SNATCHED AWAY! Tar EVERYONE with the same brush…. I hate this Govt…. How dare they use threatening tactics to enforce their ideas of what it “takes to be a good parent”. This Govt are creating criminals, by enacting rules that they come up with. People, lets take this Govt to court! Protesting doesn’t work with these buggers! Hit those that evade their taxes!!! They are in their billions of dollars – nearly 25% more than what Benefit Fraud amounts too. Maybe even more! Where are the regulations for that? NATIONAL YOU HAVE HIT THE WRONG BUTTON HERE. Get off your HOLIER than thou horse…. If your so worried about Child Abuse, it makes sense to me that we employ Plunket to make that first point of contact with newborn babies…. That is a far better way of monitoring babies who may be at risk…. Create a BILL to ensure this occurs, giving Plunket or Tipu Ora those powers to implement it. Plunket and Tipu Ora are only voluntary to join. OH NO, this Govt uses their “Power Tripping” styles to take money away from families to force them into Govt ideals around what makes a good parent, GOOD. How dare they assume the power over a parent!!!! I am disgusted, disgusted, disgusted….. I can’t believe this is happening in this country….. I oppose this BILL with energy. You guys got this absolutely WRONG, WRONG WRONG….

  7. I can see ECE teachers as being percieved by this Govt, as the only people who know how to rear children appropriately!!!!
What a load of CRAP! I have worked in ECE for many years. Many of those new graduates are young kids from High School. Straight out of High School, train (3 years), and do the job.
They are still learning about context, learning about how to work alongside whanau in appropriate ways. Because they hold a degreee or diploma does not mean they know what they are doing. Many of these young teachers are lovely people. But BOY OH BOY, their judgment calls are way over the top. Can you guys imagine these teachers making Child Abuse claims, and destroy families who access their services? I have? And I fought tooth and nail to stop these judgments being made against families (that were untrue). Stupid claims like “Oh his parents always send him to kindy with noodles. Im sure thats not good enough” or “Gosh, his parents always loads his lunchbox up with bars. That’s abuse if you ask me”. Crap statements like that. I have no faith in ECE teachers as being the BEST IN THE BUSINESS. They are NOT! I have worked alongside many great teachers, but sadly, they are rare gems…. These rare gems are leaving the sector now because they can see the inconsistencies of the quality of teacher coming into our communities. Parents, don’t be fooled by the relationship you have built with teachers in ECE. They seem like lovely respectful teachers… Dig deeper Parents….. Your kids deserve it! The teacher who will fight for your child’s rights, may well be the teacher who says little and talks straight up! Not the one who is lovely and polite and recieves you every morning with a smile and tells you that your kid is wonderful and can do this and that…… Dig Deeper!!!! Expect ECE rates to skyrocket!!!!!

  8. Quite incredible that a so called centre-right government who I have believed espoused the right to “Free Enterprise” with minimal government interference, should decide to attempt to impliment such dracion legislation forcing people into their hidden mould – i.e. their hidden way of thinking – by denying the ordinary public the right to educate their own children howsoever they choose.
I’m well aware of the current trendy-lefty hippy PC tripe that public schools force down the throat of their charges. Lulling them in order to make them easier to control.
It’s apparent to me that most, if not all, of the current members of the two major parties in Parliament are of lamentable quality – just puppets on the strings of those who wish to shape the world according to their vuglar philosophy – which seeks to drag democracy back into the dark days of a controlling fuedal system which benefits only a select few. The rest of us are just their tenants and cash cows farmed like animals in the field.

  9. This would be a terrible bill to have go through…just another right of choice being taken away from parents. I would have it a guess that most of the families that we are lead to believe that this bill would be targeting already are making use of any child care that they can get for free or cheap so why make it mandatory ? Or is it that our government is looking for yet another way to control and brainwash the people and what better place to start than with the children…yes that is how it would appear.
When my children were young we tried ECE but they didn’t enjoy it at all and I soon got tired of the constant colds and flues that were brought home, so we stop going. They have been Home Educated and have grown up into very responsible and hard working members of society. So please tell me again WHY you think ECE etc is necessary ????

  10. I think this is a good plan. For every right there are related responsibilities. For those accepting financial support from the Government they need to be prepared to accept the requirements the government puts in place. This follows the example of Scandinavian countries requiring children to be enrolled with a GP, receive early childhood education etc. one reason for this is to monitor our children closely and ensure they don’t fall between the gaps and live in at risk situations. It is a reality in NZ that some of our children live in poor conditions at risk, with minimal stimulation and opportunity. If the government provides quality preschool care for children this is a great opportunity. We need to focus on opening high quality centres in low socio economic areas, to remove the barriers for families.

  11. I am absolutely and totally opposed to this bill being passed. I want my values, standards and beliefs passed to my children as the right of a parent, not the agenda of the state who has sold out to corporations and banks. This is being done in the guise of benefiting children, but it is not. My instinct and my education is telling me this is serving another more sinister agenda.
Research tells us that separating young children from their mothers for too many hours of the day creates people who are full of insecurity, anxiety and irrational fears. This is the making of more serious social problems. Research also shows that home schooling gives the child more individual attention than the state school system can provide and makes for a more rounded individual. This is a punishing bill upon those who already have little and are struggling diverting attention away from those who are in the process of trying to take and control everything. I thought World War 2 was the struggle against this level of state control.

  12. This is to lodge my adamant opposition to a bill that turns up as gross and prejudicial to those in need. Consider how many people are being made redundant in droves almost daily because of the failure of bad governance. At best it comes out of a blame mentality that doesn’t look any further for the true motive.

My body, mind and spirit is my own from birth to the grave. My children’s body, mind and spirit is their own, as an inherent right of being born human. My instinct is my first and faithful protector from anything that it deems dangerous to my health, well being or that of my children’s. This is true of every human, every mother and every father through out history. Step back and let the instinct read the truth of this bill. Mine immediately alerted me that something was off about it.

What I’m saying is that the natural intelligence of every human complex will tell us what we need to know. A mother knows better than anyone else what her child needs. Nature ensured that it was that way for the continuance of the species, be it education, health or whatever. Anything that tries to make a law to separate mothers from children, or to legislate to enforce you to put your children’s mental formation or health into someone elses hands is simply wrong. Who benefits? Ultimately, not the child.

I recommend the documentary ‘Thrive’ which is a reasonable appraisal of the the state of the human race at this time, including our poor overall health and a failing education system that is not serving the needs of everyone, and more and more, those who have not. So letting the state take more control of eduction and health makes no sense. There is more to fear from a bill such as this passing that not.

  13. I am totally AGAINST forcing parents to put their children in day care so they can go back to work. Letting the state take more control of eduction and health makes no sense & I feel sick to the stomach that the importance of a bond between a parent and child has little value and recognition in the eyes of people that make any important decisions in this country. This is a punishing bill upon those who already have little and are struggling while diverting attention away from those who are in the process of trying to take and control everything. The current members of the two major parties in Parliament are of lamentable quality, just puppets on the strings of those who wish to shape the world according to their vulgar philosophy & seemingly they seek to drag democracy back into the dark days of a controlling feudal system which benefits only a select few. I would guess that most of the families that we are lead to believe that this bill would be targeting already are making use of any child care that they can get for free or cheap so why make it mandatory ? Or is it that our government is looking for yet another way to control and brainwash the people and what better place to start than with the children…yes that is how it would appear. To separate mothers & fathers from children, or to legislate to enforce you to put your children’s mental formation or health into someone else’s hands is simply wrong, who will benefit? Ultimately, not the child.

  14. I wish to utterly and vehemently oppose this bill . I understand what they are trying to accomplice but don’t believe this is the way to make any positive and or meaningful progress towards child welfare by beneficiary bashing. Who are they to say all beneficiaries are bad parents and are obviously to stupid to be able to raise and care for their children. Do we live in a dictatorship? This problem is not just a lower social economic problem.
Paula Bennett might as well grow a moustache for Movember and clean off her jack boots because Stalin would be extremely proud of her efforts.
Since when did my employer have the right to tell me how to run my family and life. You would not take that from your employer so why should the government be allowed to dictate what is clearly issues that we as parents must have the freedom to decided for ourselves.
It is extremely discriminatory of the government to think that they know best. Paula Bennett was a solo mum on the DPB, so she was a bad parent that was obviously incapable of raising children, until she found a “JOB”. Now I don’t believe that any more than you do, but that is what the government is telling us!
So I say back off you bureaucratic dictators, go back to the dark cave you crawled out off and leave us to raise our children the way we feel best serves them.

  15. Parents who decide to raise their children outside of the main stream education system do so because they believe in giving their children the best opportunities and grounding for life, that they as loving parents can offer. We are parents who take parenting seriously making sacrifices with regards to work and career opportunities so that we can be parents that make educated choices as to what is best for our children. Fundamental human rights stem from the fact that we are born, not that somebody grants us constitutional rights. Real parenting, real people do not require governments to make these decisions for them. I have done my research and decided that there are HUGE risks with regards to taking vaccines. Heavy metals, undetected and unscreened viruses to name a few. It is fact that children die of anaphalactic shock as a result of vaccines and parents are forced to fight lengthy court cases to establish the fact that their child is dead due to a direct result of vaccination. These are risks I’m not prepared to take with my children’s lives. I believe it is wrong to force parents to put their own children into systems of education that will inevitable involve forced vacinations that can be potentially harmful if not deadly. After all who’s children are we talking about.
