PO Box 14073, Tauranga 3143 www.bopsymphonia.org.nz

Dear Home Schooler

Attached (see below) is some information about our upcoming RISING STARS finals concert on Friday 4th September.  This year we have six great young musicians who will compete for the title in the Concerto Competition, and the winning piece in the inaugural Composition Competition will also be on the programme.  See attached (See below) for more details!

Please encourage all your students and parents to come along and support these talented young people. Their hard work and dedication is a real inspiration to all of us.  We recommend you buy your tickets in advance to avoid queues on the night and avoid the possibility of being turned away if the theatre is sold out!

Please get back to me if you’d like any more information.

Best regards

Maggie

Bay of Plenty Symphonia presents the finals concert of this year’s Rising Stars Competitions. Six talented young musicians from Bay of Plenty schools will perform a movement from their chosen concerto, accompanied by the orchestra. The works to be played are mostly classics of the repertoire and will be well known to music lovers. The finalists are:

  • Phoebe Cho (Bethlehem College): Beethoven – Piano Concerto No.3
  • Jessie Colbert (John Paul College, Rotorua): Dittersdorf – 2nd Concerto for Double Bass
  • Soomin Kim (Tauranga Girls’ College): Grieg – Piano Concerto.
  • Esther Lee (Otumoetai Intermediate School): Haydn – Cello Concerto No.1
  • Janet Reid (Bethlehem College): Mendelssohn – Violin Concerto
  • Andrew Robinson (Tauranga Boys’ College): Weber – Clarinet Concerto No. 1.

Their performances will be judged by a panel of prestigious judges comprising musicologist Peter Walls ONZM, pianist Rae de Lisle ONZM and Bassoonist Ben Hoadley. While the panel deliberates, 14 year old violinist Anna Lee, who was the winning Rising Star in 2013, will perform Wieniawski’s Légende with the Symphonia.
For the first time in this biennial competition, Bay of Plenty Symphonia has included a Composition category. The concert will feature a performance by the orchestra of the winning piece, Soomin Kim’s Warmth of Passion.
Prizes will be presented by the Deputy Mayor of Tauranga, Kelvin Clout.
