As at 1 July 2019, there were 6,573 home schooled students. These students belong to 3,597 families and represent 0.8% of total school enrolments as at 1 July 2019.

The number of home educators in New Zealand has been increasing over the last few years. In fact this is the highest number of home educators in New Zealand since statistics began in 1998 when there were 4909 children, and less than 100 children when we began in 1985. First line is Males, second line is females and the third is the total home educators in New Zealand.

Homeschooling Turnover

Between 1 July 2018 and 1 July 2019 there was an overall net increase of 275 students; 1,347 students entered into homeschooling and 1,072 students finished homeschooling.

The average age of the 1,347 students entering into homeschooling was 9 years old, 82.6% were aged 12 or under and 1.1% were age 16 or above…

The average age of the 1,072 students finishing homeschooling was 13 years old, 44.8% were aged 12 or under, and 23.5% were 16-years old or above. Of the students finishing homeschooling during the year ending 1 July 2019, 28% had been in homeschooling less than a year, 37.9% had been in homeschooling for 1 – 5 years, and 12.2% had been in homeschooling for 10 years or more. The average time spent in homeschooling of leaving students was 3.9 years.

Learning From Home

Quite a few folks are wondering whether/how we as home educators can access the resources the Ministry is providing for students under lockdown. 

The resources the govt is rolling out are targeted at students enrolled in schools or ECEs, as those are the students the govt is responsible to deliver teaching/resources to. Home educated students do not have the right or ability to access most of those resources on an individual basis. However, some of the resources are being delivered on public platforms, and there is nothing whatsoever preventing home educated students from taking advantage of them. These could include the 6 hours a day of broadcast content over the dedicated tv channels (and on demand), the resources and links on the Ministry’s website and so on. 

We cannot, however, expect to be able to get access to free devices, supported internet provision, or hardpacks of printed resources, stationery etc. Nor to have teachers send us stuff and tell us what our kids should be learning/doing at this time. 

Ultimately, I think we as home educators are in a good position – we can, as always, have the freedom to choose our children’s program of learning etc, and we can tap into some of the additional online resources if we wish, while they last. We should also remember that this is not something they’re rolling out as an on-going, long term option; eg the tv broadcasting is only funded for a month, with review after that. Schools will resume, though maybe not all at once. All of what is being offered is a stop-gap measure to ensure they are delivering some kind of educational content to students in the meantime. It’s not a roll-out of “great learning at home alternatives” to replace schoolrooms as such, though lessons learned may well shape some of what they offer in the future. 

So, we can pick and choose some of the useful online content, or maybe learn about things that have been there all along we just weren’t aware of before which may be useful going forward, but remain in control and responsible for determining, directing, and resourcing our children’s programs of learning as the parents of exempt students. Note: I know that some of our families have both exempt and enrolled students. They should, of course, be able to access resources for their enrolled students on the same basis as any other family.

Isolation education/unschooling/schooling

A reminder, especially to those new here, we are all Isolation Educating/Unschooling/Schooling.

This is not Home Education/Unschooling/Schooling.

Home Education/Unschooling looks so very different with so very different support networks. We are all missing the groups we used to attend, the meet ups we used to enjoy etc. That is so for, us as parents, and for our children.

This Post is about the current lockdown and and how we can get encouragement and make education work for our families while we are all in lockdown – for those who are wanting to home educate, unschool, looking into bringing children home in the long run, or would rather have their children in school (or have no alternative but have their children in school).  

We want to be sharing with each other how we are making Isolation Education/Unschooling/Schooling work.

Coronavirus Has Parents Looking at Homeschooling

This is a USA news report but there is a lot of things helpful for those in New Zealand And Australia looking to home educate because of COVID-19.
