Emma Thompson and husband decide to educate daughter Gaia at home

Emma Thompson and her husband Greg Wise have withdrawn their 15-year-old daughter from school and begun educating her at home.

Mr Wise, who starred in Sense and Sensibility, said their daughter Gaia had decided shortly before her GCSEs that school “wasn’t for her”.

He said: “She loves learning and she’s terribly focused and hardworking, but she didn’t like the sausage factory of formal education. I’ve no argument with that.”

Mr Wise and Ms Thompson have built a school room at the end of their garden in West Hampstead, north London, where tutors will teach Gaia.

He said: “Although I won’t be teaching her. We’ve got tutors and I’ve built her a school room in the garden.”

But the couple admit they have not yet decided what will be on their daughter’s home curriculum, with Mr Wise – who recently starred in Effie Gray – the story of Victorian critic John Ruskin’s teenage bride – joking: “I think we should just teach Latin and free-form dance. Really.”

He said home schooling made sense in a world where the nature of jobs and careers is changing at a rapid pace – requiring a more flexible approach to educating children.

“I read a fascinating statistic recently that said 60 per cent of the kids at school will go on to do jobs that haven’t yet been invented,” he said.

Although by law children have to receive full time education until the age of 17, this does not have to be at school and can be done legally at home.

‘Home educating’ families do not have to follow the National Curriculum, making the idea attractive to parents with children who find it hard to ‘fit in’; children with special needs or who have been severely bullied; and children for whom the school classroom does not suit their particular way of learning.

It is estimated that up to 60,000 children are being home educated in England and Wales at any one time.

Edwina Theunissen, of Education Otherwise, said: “School doesn’t suit everyone and it’s great that there’s a safety net like home education. Many children suffer from anxiety at school, or are finding it increasingly hard to cope with the pressure of the exam system. In other cases they are bored with what is being taught and children can gain a great deal following their own interests.

Mr Wise, 48, said parents had to be careful not to regard themselves as irreplaceable or responsible for everything that happens in their children’s lives.

“As a parent, it is easy to make yourself feel responsible for things that are out of your control, but it comes from a need to feel needed and to shape our lives,” he said.

In an interview in The Times magazine, Mr Wise, who first came to public prominence with his appearance as Mr Willoughby in the 1995 film version of Sense and Sensibility, which also starred Ms Thompson and Kate Winslet, said his daughter – who has recently been photographed with her mother at a number of film premieres – refuses to watch anything in which he appears.

He said: “This is the big argument we’re having at the moment. Gaia is OK watching her mum, though. She knows her mum’s an actress and a film star and she gets stopped in the street all the time. But Dad’s Dad. I’m a piece of furniture – we hang out and do stuFF.”

‘War on illiteracy and innumeracy’

All children in England will be expected to know up to their 12 times table when they leave primary school, the government has announced.

Education Secretary Nicky Morgan said pupils aged 11 should also know correct punctuation, spelling and grammar.

Labour said the “surest way” to raise standards was to improve the quality of teaching in the classroom.

Mrs Morgan indicated the Conservatives would ring-fence most of the schools budget if they won May’s election.

‘Master the basics’

Under the Conservatives’ plans, pupils would not be made to re-sit planned new tests until they passed, but the school could be subject to measures if they failed.

A school that failed to get every pupil to pass the tests for two years running could be paired with an outstanding school to gain extra support. It could also become part of a teacher swap where heads of departments from good schools take over temporarily.

“We have to be ambitious for our young people. If you don’t get it right at primary, then it becomes much harder for children to catch up at secondary school,” Mrs Morgan told BBC 1’s Andrew Marr show.

Key Stage Two tests already include questions on times tables and long division but pupils are given an overall mark, not for individual sections.

Mrs Morgan plans to make times tables a separate section within the maths test.

Virus Hits Kids in 10 States, Wider Outbreak Feared

There are many advantages when it comes to home educating our children. In the States there is a nasty respiratory illness outbreak at the moment.  I think we will be seeing more of these in the future.

Virus Hits Kids in 10 States, Wider Outbreak Feared

A couple of quotes:

“A respiratory virus has stricken more than 1,000 children across 10 states, causing many to wind up in the hospital and prompting concerns of a wider outbreak. About 15 percent of more than 300 children treated for respiratory illness in Missouri have ended up in an intensive care unit, according to a health alert from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.

“Public health officials fear the beginning of the new school year could allow the virus to gain momentum.

“They also should avoid contact with people who are sick, and stay home if they themselves fall ill.”

I have wondered whether increasing epidemics will not advantage home educated children and self-employed families who are already positioned for some measure of independence.

Kate Middleton Leaving Kensington Palace for the Countryside? Royal Mom Wants to Homeschool George

Kate

Is Kate Middleton about to leave her new home at Kensington Palace for a spacious and more private, countryside estate? Reports have surfaced alleging Middleton wants more privacy so that she can begin homeschooling son George, who will turn one next month.

It’s the same place that Princes William and Harry grew up in, which made moving in all the more significant for the royal family. Memories of the young princes were evoked, especially once Prince George was born. However, it appears that George is the main reason for Middleton even considering moving her family to Anmer Hall, their country estate. It would allow for greater privacy and allow the royals to be more “regular” people and fit in with the locals.

Scotland is no longer a land of freedom

Scotland is no longer a land of freedom. The Scottish Parliament passed a bill today called the “Children and Young People (Scotland) bill.” This bill states that every child under the age of 18 will have a state appointed ‘named person’ who will engage in ‘corporate parenting.’ The purpose of this bill is to ensure that all children are taught and raised in a manner approved by the Scottish state.

Children’s Minister Aileen Campbell, pictured with Education Secretary Mike Russell, said the bill would transform family services in Scotland

“Increased provision of free childcare is part of a package of reforms which have been approved by MSPs.

“Increasing support for young people in care and the appointment of a “guardian” for every child in Scotland also form part of the bill.

“The bill will see an increase in free childcare for three, four and vulnerable two-year-olds, from 475 to 600 hours – around 16 hours per week – from August.

“A bid from Labour to give vulnerable two-year-olds a legal right to care was defeated at the committee stage, as was a Tory proposal to guarantee that all children get two years of nursery care before school, regardless of when their birthday falls. (Watch for this to come up again in the future)

“The bill will also extend free school meals to all children in the first three years of primary school, from January 2015.

“Meanwhile, the plan to appoint a so-called guardian for every Scottish child has been opposed by some religious groups and the Conservatives.

“The proposal to appoint specific named persons from the NHS and councils to monitor every young person’s well-being from birth to 18 is considered one of the most controversial aspects of the bill.

“Both the Church of Scotland and the Evangelical Alliance Scotland said the bill raised concerns about diminishing the position of parents and increasing the role of the state in modern society.

“Conservative education spokeswoman Liz Smith tabled a last-minute amendment that will be debated before MSPs vote.

“Ms Campbell insisted appointing a named person for every child would “provide a safety net for those who need one”. (But take away the freedoms of most families)

“The debate on the Children and Young People Bill can be watched on demand at BBC Scotland’s Democracy Live website.
